Rhett Sutton's Message

"In my life I have dreamt more than most have lived
and lived more than most have dreamt."

-Rhett Sutton founder of D.R.R.R.R.D.

D.R.R.R.R.D. Overview

The D.R.R.R.R.D (Deep Recovery, Research, Removal and Rescue Division) is a branch of the Alliance military whose mission is to travel to the far reaches of space and perform various top-secret military missions. Since the crew members are traveling beyond the reach of Sling Stations they must travel for extended period of time while suspended in cryosleep.

The D.R.R.R.R.D. (R&R to its members and Dread to it's critics) is composed of four primary divisions:

  • Search and Rescue
  • Deep Research and Diplomacy
  • S.C.R.U.B.S.
(Sanitization, Cleanup, Removal, Uncover and Biohazard Stabilization)
  • Hawgs
(Hunt 'em, attack 'em, whip 'em, gut 'em and spit 'em out)

Each party consists of anywhere from three to twelve party members depending on the division. Typically the Hawgs and S.C.R.U.B.S. have the most members while the others have smaller groups due to the more covert nature of their operations.

Rhett Sutton and D.R.R.R.R.D. History

The D.R.C. (Deep Research Corps and prior incarnation of D.R.R.R.R.D.) was founded in 2783 by Rhett Sutton, before the advent of faster-than-light-speed-travel. Before Sutton no humans had traveled beyond the solar system.

Rhett believed that mankind's future was in the stars. He volunteered to be the first human sent (in a state of long-term cryogenic sleep) into the distant reaches of space to explore. Many others soon followed his lead, though few of them are as revered as Sutton.

For a period of about 300 years Sutton communicated on and off with the D.R.C. from the far reaches of space. In that time the barrier of light speed was broken and work began on harnessing the power of light speed travel. Shortly thereafter the first faster-than-light-speed ship was sent into space. It was around this time that the Corps lost contact with Sutton. They believed him dead since he had long outlived his supplies and oxygen. A funeral was held for him when his physical age reached 382. It was one of the most highly attended funerals during that century.

475 years later, the D.R.C. was falling apart. Corruption had run rampant through the Alliance government and all intergalactic research was put on the back-burner in favor of a stronger military to squelch the uprisings of various intergalactic colonies. In addition, the first communications with highly-advanced alien species were not turning out as well as hoped.

It was at this time of turmoil that the D.R.C. received a communication from its founder and hero, Rhett Sutton. His message inspired the people to continue his work and actually rallied them to support the Alliance more strongly. The Alliance seized this opportunity and reinstated the D.R.C. as the D.R.R.R.R.D. They also covertly changed its primary function to more of a military intelligence and cleanup operation.

Sutton has not been heard of since, but there are many who believe that he may still be alive. His immortal words became the motto of the D.R.R.R.R.D. and inspired many generations to follow in his footsteps.

Rhett Sutton's Message

"This is General Rhett Sutton of the Deep Research Corps reporting in. I’m sure you have long ago written me off as dead, but I am still alive and kicking. I’m 857 years old. It’s been 415 years since I last saw another living human, but I am not alone. I am sending this message as a gift of hope and a plea for you not to give up. Mankind can survive if they put aside their hostile ways and reach for the stars.

I have seen the solutions to the eternal dilemmas of mankind and they have inspired me to keep searching. Out here in the shadows, I seek answers, truths. Out here, I am alive. In my life I have dreamt more than most have lived and lived more than most have dreamt. I have seen the unseen, touched the untouchable.

Helios, that fickle god of light, has forsaken me, but I in turn have sought out new gods beyond the reach of the angels; out here where that sacred symbol isn’t even a twinkling in the northern sky. I have seen that there is hope for our species. Do not give up the search.

As the great human, Albert Einstein, once said “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.”

This is General Rhett Sutton over and out."
